Last Tuesday (5th September), Netanyahu addressed the Israeli public
to explain why he opposed a hostage deal with Hamas.   To make his case, he
stood in front of a map displaying the age-old right-wing Zionist dream of the
‘Greater Israel’.   As commentators noted, it showed the West Bank as part of
Israel and Gaza, figured on it, only to make the point that by its proximity to
Israel, it represented an existential threat to it.  It was on 22nd September
2023, at the UN General Assembly meeting that Netanyahu had brandished
just such a map of Israel. The message was clear: “Israel from the river to the
sea.”  At the time, for all their lip service to “the two-state solution,” Western
governments stayed silent.   And their support for Israel’s war against Gaza
continues even as the recent escalation in military attacks against West Bank
towns clearly demonstrate that Netanyahu’s map is not a dream but a plan.
