On May 15th, Nakba Day, the Sheffield Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid held a rally outside the Town Hall, leafletted Councillors and passersby and displayed an exhibition of archive images, commemorating the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, a day of the utmost gravity in the Palestine solidarity calendar. The images drew attention to the mass expulsion, dispossession and destruction of that historic event. But the Nakba is not a moment in moment in history over and done with; it is ongoing.
In fact, to underscore this point, some of the images from 1947-49 are strikingly similar to the images emerging from Gaza today as Israel’s ethnic cleansing escalates into full blown genocide, with famine as an additional lethal weapon.
